Sisters in Spirit vigils planned across Saskatchewan

A number of walks are being held across the country, including in Saskatchewan, to remember murdered and missing Indigenous women today.

A number of vigilsare being held across the country, including in Saskatchewan, to remembermurdered and missing Indigenous women today.

The Sisters in Spirit gatherings are held each Oct. 4 by family members of the missing and murdered, as well as other concerned citizens.

Last year's gatherings pushed for a federal inquiry, which has since been announced.

The Native Women's Association of Canada tracks the vigils on its website, including those in Saskatchewan. It says the gatherings have grown in number from 11 more than a decade ago, to more than 200 last year.

Saskatoon walk

In Saskatoon, the 10th anniversary walk is being held tonight from 6 p.m. CST until 9 p.m.at the White Buffalo Youth Lodge on 20th Street West.After the walk, there will be soup and bannock as well as drummers and singers.

Regina vigil

Regina's gathering is this evening at First Nations University of Canada. It begins at 5 p.m. with a pipe ceremony, followed by speakers, a candlelight vigil and a community gathering and meal.

Prince Albert

In Prince Albert, a vigil will be held at noon in the lobby of the main office of thePrince Albert Grand Council.

There are also gatherings today in Onion Lake, La Ronge and La Loche according to NWAC's website.

  • Onion Lake Run/walk, candlelight vigil, balloon raising and speeches from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and from 4 - 8 p.m.
  • La Ronge Memorial walk from LLRIB Band office parking lot to Urban Rez on La Ronge Avenue at 11a.m.
  • La Loche Evening vigil. speakers, awareness, prayers, drum songsat the La Loche Friendship Centre from 6 - 7:30 p.m.
