Over 750,000 registered to vote in Saskatchewan election

Over 750,000 people are registered to vote in Saskatchewan's election April 4. People may also register on voting day or when they vote at an advance poll.

On Saturday, Elections Saskatchewan the agency that oversees the conduct of the vote announced that 751,564 voter registrations had been processed.

"As of right now, our coverage rate is 92 per cent of the estimated 815,000 eligible voters," Michael Boda, Saskatchewan's chief electoral officer, said in a statement.

"That's an increase of over 150,000 voters registered for this election compared to the 2011 election."

The database for the 2016 election has been in the works for about a year.

"This is a significant improvement in the quality of the list and is a result of several busy months of promoting registration, having voters register, and updating voters' identity and address information," Boda noted.

He explained that the revised voters list will be printed and sent to returning offices before advance polls open on Tuesday.

Officials working at 173 advance voting locations will use this list. Once a voter casts a ballot during advance voting, they are crossed off the list and recorded in Elections Saskatchewan's poll books to ensure they do not vote a second time on April 4.

"Any eligible voter who is not registered can still register in person at their assigned voting location when they go to vote, either at advance voting or on election day," Boda said.
