Saskatchewan legislature to grow by 3 seats

Saskatchewan's political map will include three more constituencies by the time the next provincial election rolls around.

Saskatchewan's political map will include threemore constituencies by the time the next provincial election rolls around.

Under legislation Justice Minister Don Morgan introduced in the legislature on Thursday, there'll be 61 seats rather than 58.

The change will take effectin the 2015 general election.

Morgan said the extra seats are needed because Saskatchewan is growing.

It will likely mean one more constituency in Regina, one more in Saskatoon and one more rural constituency, he said.

The government plans to appoint a Constituency Boundaries Commission to redraw the political map next year.

The idea is to make sure there's roughly the same number of voters in each constituency, Morgan said.

While there's no law requiring the government to add seats, if it doesn't, it might mean rural Saskatchewan would lose one or two seats to the cities, he said.
