Saskatchewan ombudsman investigating state of long-term care

Saskatchewan's ombudsman will investigate whether there are system-wide problems in long-term care.

Mary McFadyen was asked by the health minister to review the case of a senior who died after a fall in a Regina care home.

Margaret Warholmwas found to bemalnourished, with a huge bedsore on her back at the time of her death.

Warholm'sis not the only complaint concerning long-term care which McFadyen sayshas been brought to her office. She says that is why her review will study the system.

"People that are in long-term care homes have dedicated themselves to life," says McFadyen. "It's important that your final years are lived in dignity, quite frankly. So we have to make sure that the system's working properly."

The ombudsman has started her investigation.She says it is a priority for her office and will be completed as soon as possible.

The findings will be made public.
