Saskatchewan Party promises to scrap PST on used cars

The Saskatchewan Party says if elected on Nov. 7, it would scrap the provincial sales tax on used cars and trucks, at a cost of $45 million in the first year of implementation.

The Saskatchewan Party says if elected next month, it would scrap the provincial sales tax on used cars and trucks, costing the treasury $45 million in the first year of implementation.

Saskatchewan Party Leader Brad Wall said the idea of paying PST on the same used car over and over again every time it's sold is one that strikes people as dumb.

Under the party's proposal, the tax, currently five per cent, would only be paid once on new vehicles or on used vehicles brought in from outside Saskatchewan where there is no sales tax.

There is now an exemption on privately sold vehicles,no sales tax on the first $3,000 of the sale.

The Saskatchewan Party says based on an average selling price of $9,000 per vehicle, the plan will save about 100,000 people $450 apieceeachyear.

The cost of eliminating the tax is expected to total $186.5 million over the first four years.

Theparty's proposal was one of a number of platform planks leaked on the weekend when a series of TV campaign commercials was released on a party website.

The provincial election is Nov. 7.
