Saskatchewan posts $62M surplus for 2014-15

The province has ended its 2014-15 year with a $62 million surplus.

It's about $9 million less than expected, but the government is still pleased with the results.

"The fact we were able to conclude such a challenging year on budget and with a modest surplus demonstrates, once again, the resilience of the Saskatchewan economy," Finance Minister Kevin Doherty said in a news release.

Oil revenues were down nearly $300 million from what was budgeted in March 2014. However, the government was able to make up for some of that with potash.The government made close to $150 million more than expected.

As for the extra cash, the government has no immediate plans, but it could be used to fight wildfires, flooding or drought, an official said.
