Saskatchewan Roughriders playoff preview

The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos will face each other in the west semi-final this Sunday.

Last week, the Riders beat the Eskimos in a game where little was on the line.

Things are much different this time around: the winner moves one step closer to taking home the Grey Cup.

There is still no word on whether or not quarterbackDarian Durant will return from injury on Sunday.

If the reigns are instead passed to backup Kerry Joseph, he'll be in good company. Earlier this weekthe Eskimos announced Matt Nichols will start ahead of regularMike Reilly, who has been injured but is reportedly available to play.

Riders coach Corey Chamblin said Wednesday that he's not sure who his starting quarterback will be.

"I can't really tell you that right now, like I said based off what I've seen today was just a little. So I have to go back and watch film and tomorrow we'll get a better assessment of where exactly we think he'll be," Chamblin said.

Durant said he's getting more and more comfortable.

"You know we're on schedule for everything, everything is progressing nicely and we'll see where we are," said Durant.

The Riders have played a number of notable playoff games in Edmonton against the Eskimos.

1989 West final

The Eskimos went 16 and 2 during the regular season. They went into the West final as huge favourites. The Riders shocked the CFL winning 32-21.

As almost everyone in Saskatchewan knows, the Riders went on to defeat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and win the Grey Cup.

1992 West semi-final

The Riders trailed by 22-20 with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter.

They got the ball into field goal range, setting up a chance to win the game. With all of Rider Nation holding its breath, kicker Dave Ridgway lined up for the win... and then slipped on the frozen turfat Commonwealth.

1997 West final

The Eskimos were once again heavy favourites and planned on playing at home in the Grey Cup final the following week. But Reggie Slack and the surprising Riders spoiled the party, winning 31-30.
