Saskatchewan sets aside $400K to fight deadly pig virus

Saskatchewan hog producers will have a contingency fund if a deadly hog virus hits this province.

The federal and provincial governments are putting up $200,000 and Sask Pork will match that amount.

The money will be used to offset costs if porcine epidemic diarrhea, or PED, hits Saskatchewan.

The disease has wiped out millions of pigs elsewhere in North America.

The provincial government says it has also set aside $90,000 for the surveillance of PED at high-risk sites includingassembly yards, abattoirs, renderers and truck facilities.
