Saskatoon baby survives rare digestive disorder

Two Saskatoon parents say they finally feel relieved after their 10-month-old sonreceived the surgery he needed to treat a rare digestive disorder.

Sylvie and Peter Kot said they recognized something was wrong with their son Kayden when he was only a few days old.

For six months, they tried to figure out what was wrong with him, seeing doctors in Saskatoon and across Canada.

Kayden couldn't keep any milk down, vomiting up to 25 times a day.

"He was crying constantly," said Peter Kot.

"He was very sensitive to any noise. Anything would set him off. He was uncomfortable, he wouldn't sleep, he wouldn't settle."

The only way the infant could eat was through a feeding tube.

Kayden was finally diagnosed with a severe allergy to milk protein, but by that point he had stopped eating all together.

Desperate, the Kots found a specialist in Coloradoto operate on their son, attaching a tube to his stomach.

Learning to eat again

It's been about two weeks since Kayden had the surgeryand his parents said he has learned how to eat all over again.

"He's a changed little boy," said Sylvia Kot.

"He's like a normal little boy. He's really medically stable. This is the most medically stable we've ever seen Kayden."

The province paid some of Kayden's medical expenses.

Friends and family raised almost $20,000 online to help the couple as well.

The Kots said they "can't thank people enough" for the help and support they've received.
