Saskatoon deflates expanded bike lanes plan

A plan to add more bicycle lanes in Saskatoon in 2011 has been dropped from the city's proposed budget.

A plan to add more bicycle lanes in Saskatoon in 2011 has been dropped from the city's proposed budget.

Saskatoon's original budget plan included $500,000 to be spent on dedicated bike routes.

The expenditure, however has been cut.

Cyclists in the city told CBC News they believe there was a demand for improved bike routes.

"Cyclists have demonstrated the need for more infrastructure," Sean Shaw, one cycling enthusiast, said. "But that didn't translate into dollars in the budget this year."

More bike routes was also touted as a way to improve safety.

According to reports, Saskatoon has a notable number of year-round cyclists among the highest, in per capita terms, in the country.
