SaskPower CEO apologizes for smart meters

After weeks of worry and speculation around SaskPowers smart meters, the power companys CEO is saying sorry to its customers.

The message from CEO Robert Watson was posted on SaskPower's website Tuesday evening

SaskPower had been planning on replacing about 500,000 meters with new smart meters. That program has been halted and the utility has been told to remove about 105,000 devices already installed. (CBC)

After weeks of worry and speculation around SaskPowers smart meters, the power companys CEO is saying sorry to its customers.

SaskPower posted the message from Robert Watson on its website Tuesday evening.

I want to personally apologize. I want you to know my family has a smart meter on our home. I understand how important it is for you to know your home is safe, the statement from Watson says in part.

Last week, the provincial government ordered thatSaskPowerreplacethe smart meters.The replacement will cost the crown corporationabout $47 million and take six to nine months to complete.

Costs include the initial installation of the units,cost of stock on hand for units that were going to be installed, the cost for labour toremoveinstalled smart meters and the cost of purchasing a non-smart meter product.

Right now 105,000 customers have smart meters in Saskatchewan.

The program began in October of2013.
