Hundreds of people participated in the North Central event Monday morning, which was organized by community members and localpolice.

"To have [police as]part of the committee, you know, we're thankful for that because they realize the importance of what something like this could do," said event spokesperson Myke Agecoutay.

The walk was first organized five years agoto help dispel myths about North Centralafter a MacLean's article namedit Canada's worst neighbourhood.

But community members disagree with that assessment, choosing to focus on itsgrowth instead, including the newstadium and theMmawyatitn Centrea large community facility set to be completed in 2017. In turn, the theme of this year's walk was "honour the community".

The walk was followed by a community barbecue.
