Saskatchewan Mountie killed in crash with moose

A Saskatchewan Mountie is dead after his police vehicle ran into a moose on the highway early Friday morning.

A Saskatchewan Mountie is dead after his police vehicle ran into a moose onthe highway early Friday morning.

The accident happened just before 2 a.m. CST on Highway 14, about seven kilometres west of the town of Wilkie in the west-central part of the province.

The RCMP member has been identified as Const. Derek Pineo, 38, of the Wilkie detachment.

The crash happened near Wilkie, Sask., which is about 160 kilometres west of Saskatoon. (Google Maps)

The sole occupant of the vehicle, Pineo was declared dead at the scene.

Pineo joined the RCMP in August, 2007.

He had family in both Saskatchewanand Nova Scotia. Family members have been notified, the RCMP said Friday.

Wilkie is about 160 kilometres west of Saskatoon.
