Group handing out white poppies in Regina's downtown Thursday

A Regina peace group will be handing out white poppies downtown Thursday at lunchtime.

Regina's Making Peace Vigil will be on the corner of Scarth Street and 11th Avenue between noon and 12:30 p.m. CST handing out the poppies.

According to Florence Stratton who supports the vigil, the white poppy was first worn in England in the 1930s.

"It's a symbol of peace, of hope for an end of all wars," she said in a release.

The vigil will also be handing out red peace buttons from the Mennonite Central Committee that say "to remember is to work for peace."

The group says that Canada has been endlessly at war since 2003 and the government needs to start working for peace instead.
