Several sightings and one close encounter with wolves in the northern Saskatchewan community of La Ronge have residents on edge.

"I was walking around and all of a sudden I heard some running, you know, like something running," Billy Roberts told CBC News Friday, relayinghis recent experience. "It was a wolf coming towards me I knew right away: That's a freaking wolf."

Conservation officers told CBC News Friday they were investigating reports of wolf sightings, but most cases were just outside of town.

Roberts told CBC News his in-town encounter was genuine.

"I know what a wolf looks like," he said. "And I know what a dog looks like. There's a big difference."

Roberts said the animal, which was abouta metre tall, followed him for a short distance until he reached a cousin's truck and was able to hop in and drive away.

Roberts said people have been talking about other wolf sightings and are concerned about the risk to children.

"If the wolf sees somebody smaller than them, they won't hesitate to attack,"he said.

There were also reports from the nearby Lac La Ronge First Nation that a wolf was shot in the community.

Conservation officers said they want to hearabout any wolf sightings, right away.
