Yorkton company fined $19K for dumping oil, garbage near creek

A Saskatchewan road-paving company that left a pile of garbage near a fish-bearing creek has been fined $18,900.

In July 2013, the Ministry of Environment found used oil, oil filters, batteries, metal cones and various other items in an illegal garbage pit, about 25 kilometres north of Leoville, Sask.

A creek was about 700 metres away.

Potzus Paving and Road Maintenance Ltd. of Yorkton was fined $18,900 for violating regulations of the Environmental Management and Protection Act.

A rock-crushing crew employed by the company had dumped the garbage.

In addition to the fine, the company was ordered to pay approximately $65,000 to clean up the garbage and properly dispose of it.
