Teen charged with murder following baby boy's death in Saskatoon in open custody at time

Police in Saskatoon have charged a 16-year-old girl with second-degree murder after a baby boy died in hospital Sunday.

Police say girl, 16, is not related to infant who died from injuries

A 16-year-old girl is charged with second-degree murderin the death of a baby boy in Saskatoon on Sunday.

She appeared briefly in provincial court Monday morning. The teen charged with the city's ninth homicide of the year sat in the prisoner's box wearing a white jumpsuit as the judge spoke. She is also charged with breaching the terms of an outstanding sentence by failing to keep the peace, and consuming alcohol or drugs.

She'll be back in court Tuesday. She cannot be named because of her age.

The teen hadpleaded guilty in North Battleford provincial court on Dec.22 to five otherunrelatedcharges.

They include: breaking and entering,causing a fire,assault causing bodily harm,assault with a weaponand theft from a backpack while armed with a tire iron.

She was sentenced to 10 months in open custody, followed by five months in the community and a year probation.

Officers received a call about an injured infant boy in the 200 block of Waterloo Crescent, in the city's College Park neighbourhoodat around 7 a.m. CST on Sunday.Police said the injured baby was taken to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

They did not say how old the baby was, or how he was injured.
