Black bear found up a tree in Saskatoon industrial park euthanized after bad reaction to drug
Conservation officer says bear had adverse reaction to reversal drug used to bring it out of tranquillizer
A black bear that was tranquillized by conservation officers in Saskatoon has beeneuthanized after a bad reaction to the reversal drug.
Officers found the bear in the Hudson Bay Industrial Park early Tuesday morning on the 2900 block of Miners Ave. At 6 a.m. CST, the bear had been cornered up a tree.
As people watched, the bear sat in the branches eating leaves.
Conservation officer Rich Hildebrandsaid that it's not unusual to see bears on the move this time of year.
"So they are looking for a home territory and so they are out travelling and they're kind of ruled by their stomach in a sense," he said.
"They're constantly looking for a source of food."
He said Saskatoon is part of natural game corridor because of the river valley, forests and trees.
Hildebrand said bear was a three-year-old male that weighed about 200 pounds. There have been recent bear sightings north of the city, but this is the first time one has been captured in an urban area.
Officers had planned to release it back into the wild butHildebrandsaid the animal had an adverse reaction to the reversal drug used to bring it out of the tranquillizerand it had to beeuthanized.
