Owner gives up on plans to turn the arch structure into a dance hall

The Borden Bridge crosses the North Saskatchewan River about 50 km west of Saskatoon.

If you're in the market for a bridge, a 92-year-old entrepreneur has one you can buy.

Orville Middleton is selling the old Borden Bridge, about 50 kilometres west of Saskatoon, next to highway 16.

Middleton bought the bridge from the government in 2007 for $33,000 with plans to turn it into an open-air dance hall.

"I like dancing and it seemed like such a wonderful place," Middleton said. "The south wall I anticipated making that so it lifted up and there would be a rail there. If the weather wasn't inclementit would be nice."

Middleton is now selling the 78-year-old structure for $1 million. He saidhe's given up trying to get the approval needed from the Rural Municipality of Corman Park.

"Every time you had an idea they had so many things you had to do with no guarantee that after they were done you could go ahead and do what you wanted to do in the first place," Middleton said.

Middleton saidhe wasn't willing to pay for a study to determine the stability of the riverbank, which he says would cost about $152,000.

Middleton says there's been lots of interest since his Kijiji ad was posted last month but he hasn't received any serious offers yet.

"A million dollars or best offer," Middleton said. "It's caused more conversations and more talking at a million thanif I just said 200 thousand."

He saidifhe doesn't get a reasonable offer he'll donate the bridge to the Canadian Wildlife Association.
