The leader of the New Democratic Party has issued a statement after losing his own seat in the provincial election.

Last night, Cam Broten lost to Saskatchewan Party candidate David Buckingham by 232 votes in the constituency of Saskatoon Westview.

"Obviously this is not the result we hoped for," wrote Broten in a statement.

The Saskatchewan Party won 51 seats in the Legislature and the New Democrats won 10.

In his statement, Brotenthanked NDP volunteers from across the province, and said he planned to spend a few days with his family and colleagues, and "consider how we move forward."

He was first elected as an MLA in 2007, and was re-elected in 2011. He won the party's leadership in 2012.

It's not clear whether Brotenwill continue on as party leader. Still, he remained optimistic in his statement.

"New Democrats won't be disheartened for long," he wrote. "We are and always have beena group driven to build a stronger, fairer, and kinder province. That work will continue."
