City council committee delays Saskatoon photo radar

The City of Saskatoon's transportation committeevoted today to send its photo radar plan back to city councillors.

The two-year pilot project, which would bring photo radar to five points on Circle Drive and to five school zones in the city, will be up for debate onNovember24.

"I can't predict what everybody on city council is going to talk about or ask," said Charlie Clark, a city councillor and chair of the transportation committee. "I think what we've seen is that photo radar in any community tends to be quite controversial and it tends to have different opinions about it."

Clark said he heard concerns about signage in school zones and other details on how the project will be brought in.

"Most of the people I've heard from actually want it and think that it's a good idea and are concerned on an increasing basis about the safety of our streets."

If approved, the project will last two years, starting with a two-month period of issuing warnings.

However, the city solicitor now has to decide if councillors even have a say on photo radar.If not, Saskatoon Police andSGIcan go ahead with the project.

The first photo radar camera was set to be deployed this month.
