Cooking camp for kids showcases young chefs' talents

A group of budding chefs in Saskatoon showed off theirskills in a kitchen at Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Saskatoon campus.

A total of 43 youth, aged nine to 13, were taught cooking lessons at the school's first annual cooking camp for kids. It wasled by chef Cal Nikiforoff, a Red Seal trained cook and culinary arts instructor.

One of the campers,Valerie Naylor,said the best food she has ever tasted was made during cooking camp.

"The chicken... It was probably the best chicken I've ever had and I don't think my mom could ever make something like that," she laughed.

The 10-year-old said she learned a lot of important lessons during her week as a chefbut there's one tip that tops them all.

"It's really important the way that you cut the knife and stuff because it could end up really bad," she warned.

Other lessons during the week-long camp included food preparation, kitchen safety and cooking techniques.

On Friday, the campers showcased their talents on the last day of camp by cooking a full turkey dinner.
