Firefighters in Saskatoon worked to stop flames from one half of a duplex from entering the other after a fire started at a residence in Sutherland Saturday night.

At about 8 p.m. CST, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of a house on fire at 439 Rutherford Cres.

A total of three engines, one ladder company and one rescue unit were dispatched to the address.

Smoke and flames were coming from the front basement window of the home, which is part of a duplex, when crews first arrived on scene.

The crew immediately worked to knock down the flames and entered the home tosearch for any occupants. The home was empty at the time.

The crew also inspected the other half of the duplex to make sure therewere no residents inside and that the fire had not spread.

The family on that side of the building had safely evacuated on their own. Fire crews used fans to ventilate theirhome and verified carbon monoxide levels were at zero per cent before they allowed the family to re-enter.

The owner of the home and all tenants were notified.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and a damage report has not been released.

There are no reported injuries due to this fire.
