Saskatoon's fire chief says moving one of its stations wouldgreatly improve response times south of Circle Drive.

The Saskatoon Fire Department is asking council to move its current No. 3 station, located on Taylor Street and York Avenue and build a new station on Clarence Avenue South.

"This will provide coverage in the Stonebridge area neighbourhoods while maintaining the standards in the neighbourhoods currently served," said Fire Chief Morgan Hackl in a news release. "We are now presenting the proposed plan to the communities located next to the new station."

The new station would include bookable space for the public and be available for blood pressure and car-seat clinics.

The fire department estimates building a new station will save the city $6 million in capital costs and $2 million in annual operating costs.

A report on the new station will be presented at city committee next week.
