"What had kept my secrets in place all those years was caring too much about what others thought of me. I didn't want to look weak. I learned to bury my feelings.'Suck it up.'That's what I had learned, as if it was my only option. I know that tough love was meant to keep me on the straight and narrow, but hearing, 'suck it up,' just made me feel guiltyand for what I don't know. I now see how damaging this way of dealing with my feelings was to my healing process."
