The historic Third Avenue United Church has a new owner.

The River Bend Presbytery executive confirms it approved the sale of the church to a non-profit corporation headed by John Orr.

Presbytery chair Rev. Mike Webster said the sale is welcome news.

"We are delighted to report that the Third Avenue United Church building will be preserved. This has consistently been our desire and intention," he said in a news release.

"This sale is the result of a tremendous effort by the congregation of Third Avenue United Church in co-operation with River Bend Presbytery. The reward for the city is a first-rate performance venue, and the reward for the congregation is an opportunity to make a new beginning in ministry in downtown Saskatoon."

The heritage building is known for its unique architecture and acoustics.

But it is also in need of expensive repairs.
