Indigenous fashion hits the runway at Wasuskewin Heritage Park

Stories will be told by the fashion that hits the runway at Wasuskewin Heritage Park Saturday night.

Global Indigenous Management out of Australia has teamed up with members of Saskatoon's Indigenous fashion community to showcase designs.

Tina Waru, the founder of Global Indigenous Management, said many Indigenous designers base their fashions on stories.

"From the textile, from the design to the resources that are used to actually make that garment," Waru told CBC Radio's Saskatoon's Morning. "So it's really interesting when you look at Indigenous fashioneach piece has a story. And you can see the story in it."

Most of the designers being featured in the show are from Saskatoon.

Helen Oro of Helen Oro designs, which is collaborating with Global Indigenous Management, said Indigenous designers are starting to break away from stereotypes and break into the mainstream.

The runway event begins at 7 p.m. CST.
