Swipe right for cute kitties: 'Kittinder' to find homes for cats in Saskatoon

The Saskatoon SPCA has adopted the methods of a popular dating app in an effort to findhomes for cats and kittens.

"Kittinder" inspired byTinder createsprofiles for kittens and cats that needhomesin thehope thatpeople will"swipe right" to find their newfeline companion.

Although Kittinderisnotactually an app, the profiles they made for their social media accounts got a lot of attention.

"We actually had someone from the Press Association in the United Kingdom pick up the story," said Jasmine Hanson, education and public relations coordinator for the Saskatoon SPCA.

'Benefits of animal companionship'

The idea for Kittinder came during Valentine's Day season.

"We know that Valentine's Day is kind of a lonely day for a lot of people so we wanted to do something that reminded them about the benefits of animal companionship rather than just human companionship," Hanson said.

The caption on the photos reads "Feeling lonely this Valentine's Day? There's no better friend than a feline friend."

The idea may be cute but it alsoserves a higher purpose.The cat population at the Saskatoon SPCA over the past year has been at an all-time high, according to Hanson.

Most of the cats from Kittinder have been adopted.

Cat profiles

Here's a sampling of the biographies the staff wrote for theadoptable cats:

• Calliope:I'm an Aquarius, which probably tells you way more than you really need to know. Adopt me and I'll spend my days lazing in the sunshine like a French supermodel.
• Caspian:I lift, and I have strong opinions on gluten and kale. Don't let that scare you, thoughI'm a giant softy that makes fast friends. #gains
• Rocket:I'm ambitious and social, but really, I'm just looking for someone to spend time with as I struggle through med school.
• Sampson: I enjoy my afternoons on the slopes, but I'm also just a chill dude looking for a forever home. *Must be catnip friendly.*
