Mtis Nation-Saskatchewan will hold Legislative Assembly

It appears a long-standing conflict within the Mtis Nation-Saskatchewan could be coming to an end. The organization will hold a Legislative Assembly, followed by a General Assembly, at the end of July in Yorkton, Sask.

Only the second time in three years gathering will take place

The Mtis Nation - Saskatchewan will hold a Legislative Assembly and General Assembly in July.

It appears a long-standing conflict within the MtisNationSaskatchewan could be coming to an end.

The organization will hold a Legislative Assembly, followed by a General Assembly, at the end of July.

There has only been one Legislative Assembly held in the past three years. It is required to hold two per year.Years of political infighting in the institution has created a situation where it was very difficult to hold a meeting.

Many Mtissay the last four years have been very frustrating.

"Now they finally have to get to work," said John Lagimodiere, publisher of Eagle Feather News. "They've been ordered by a judge to do this over a year ago, and now it's kind of a relief that they'll be getting down to business."

The loss of funding has meant the MtisNation's finances are being run by a third-party manager, and many of their programs have stopped.

However, many other affiliated Mtisinstitutions, like the Gabriel Dumont Institute, the Clarence Campeau Development Fund and Saskatchewan MtisEconomic Development, are still running, showing that the work of the Mtisis continuing.

"Your average, ordinary Mtisperson is so not reliant on the MtisNation-Saskatchewan," said Lagimodiere. "All those affiliates are providing services to the Mtispeople, that previous MtisNation-Saskatchewan leaders helped create."

Many Mtishope the MNLA paves the way to an election that could be held by this fall.

"The fighting will end after an election," he said. "I think the majority of the community is saying, 'Thank God. Get it done.'"

The MtisNation Legislative Assembly (MNLA) is a key gathering that determines policy questions, among other things, for Mtisin the province.

The MNLA and General Assembly will begin with delegate registration on July 29 in Yorkton, Sask.

The MNLA will officially begin on July 30 and run for two days. The General Assembly will take place on the afternoon of July 31.
