New Saskatoon film pokes fun at serial killer documentaries

David LaRiviere is slightly anxious at how tomorrow night's audience is going to react to his latest film.

Entitled Evil From The Outset?, the 60minute movie is a satire of serial killer documentaries that was filmed using 16 local actors.

"I'll be very curious to see how people react to the film. It will be very interesting to see how people respond," said LaRiviere.

The Saskatoon native says he immerses himself in the media on a daily basis and isdrawn to documentaries.

"We tend to think of documentaries as windows onto truths but they have to be, by virtue of the fact, that they're constructed."

That offered LaRiviere an opportunity to poke fun at those documentaries that focus on serial killers. It's a genre, he argues, that thrives on the misery of others.

He went about his satire by making sure every scene was thoroughly planned out.

"Everything is aggressively composited to the point where not a single location shot is actually taken. Everything is drawn from the internet and from the comfort from my living room. All of the actors are shot in front of a green screen," explained LaRiviere.

The film was supported, in part, by an independent artists grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board. It will be shown at 9:30 p.m. CST Thursday night at The Roxy Theatre.
