Power back on in Saskatoon

Several Saskatoon neighbourhoods were without power for more than an hour on Easter Monday morning, but Twitter was lighting up.

Several Saskatoon neighbourhoodswere without power for more than an houron Easter Monday morning.

In the downtown area, businesses were in the dark and the street lights were out. Starting at about 9:20 a.m. CST, power was also out in several neighbourhoods on the city's west side.

Saskatoon Light & Power said it appearsthe outage was caused by ice and humidity affecting a substation near 1st AvenueN. and 33rd Street. That led to problems at nine substations along a major transmission line.

By around 10:40 a.m., power had been restored.

The loss of power also affected the city's website. According to an official, staff from Saskatoon's information technology division spent part of the day working to restore online services. A meeting was set, for Tuesday, to look into what happened to the site and what measures can be put in place to avoid online outages in the future.
