Province's first gay-straight alliance summit to take place in Saskatoon

Saskatchewan's first gay-straight alliance summit is taking place this month in Saskatoon.

OUT Saskatoon has teamed up with Camp fYrefly to bring the two-day conference to teachers and students from around the province.

"Students whoidentify with the LGBT community in rural settings often feel isolated,"said AmandaGuthrie, youth and education coordinator for OUT Saskatoon.

"And so, it's really important that they have the opportunity to meet others that are like them and to meet people who are concerned about similar issues so that they don't feel soalone."

The summit will feature two keynote speakers with over 12 workshops and 20 presenters for attendees to choose from.

"We thought that it was really important to provide a space to bring all of these students together, to get them to meet one another, [and] especially for the advisors to meet one another so that we can brainstorm and be strategic about what GSAs are working on across the province," said Guthrie.

The summit will take place on April 15 and16 at Walter Murray Collegiate.
