An inmate and staff member at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre havetested positive for COVID-19, according to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Corrections and Policing.

The inmate is the first at the jail to have tested positive for the illness. The staff member is the third employee to test positive, the spokesperson said.

"Corrections staff are working with public health authorities to ensure contact tracing and testing is done, and that all necessary precautions are being taken within the correctional facility," the spokesperson said in an email.

The ministry cannot give information about how many staff and inmates are self-isolating because of "how rapidly population counts and circumstances can change within a correctional centre," the spokesperson said.

One unit at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre had been put under quarantine after two staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

Specific details about the inmate or staff who tested positive will not be provided due to privacy, the spokesperson said.
