Saskatoon council calls for inquiry into missing, murdered indigenous women

Saskatoon city council is calling for an inquiry or round table on missing and murdered indigenous women.

A motion was passed Monday night at city council.

Mairin Loewen, Ward 7 councillor, put forward the motion.

"Even though the issues that surround this are typically thought of as a federal issue or a provincial issue, ultimately our constituents are affected by this. People that live in Saskatoon are affected," she said.

A member of the advocacy group Women Walking Together saidshe is happy with council's initiative.

"The work is not easy. Sometimes it's harder to have our indigenous folk attend a setting like city council chambers, not very often that we do," said Darlene Okemaysim-Sicotte.

Okemaysim-Sicotte is one of two women who asked to speak to council before it voted. Women Walking Together has also called for an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.
