In-person classes Monday are cancelled for high school students in Saskatoon due to a winter storm that brought heavy snow to the city over the weekend.

Saskatoon Public Schools and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools sent a joint news release out Sunday night saying the storm has created potentially unsafe conditions for staff and students to attend school on Monday.

The winter storm continues to track its way through the province.Much of the southern half of the province was under blizzard, winter storm, or snowfall warnings on Sunday.

The City of Saskatoon is asking residents to stay in their homes as the storm continues to impact road conditions.

The school news release said the decision was made in discussion with the City of Saskatoon and emergency services.

The cancellationcomes on the eve of Saskatoon's municipal election.

Monday was a previously scheduled professional development day for elementary students, while high school students were scheduled to attend class.

"Cancelling in-person classes helps ensure the safety of students and staff members, while supporting the city's efforts to clear streets and facilitate the municipal election, for which several of our schools are polling stations," said the release.

The school divisions noted that teachers will provide direction and assignments for their students through at-home learning. Students and parents are encouraged to watch for information through their email.

Classes scheduled through Saskatoon Public Schools online learning centre and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools cyber school will continue.

Information regarding Tuesday classes will be shared with families later Monday.
