No charges in Saskatoon homicide investigation after woman found to be defending herself, kids

A case police were calling Saskatoon's first homicide of 2016 will not result in charges after an investigation determined thewoman involved was defendingherself and her children.

On March 11, Saskatoon police were called to a house at 1501 Preston Ave. S shortly after 1 a.m. CST.

Officers found a 29-year-old man badly injured and he was pronounced dead in the hospital shortly after. A 36-year-old woman was taken into custody but laterreleased.

After the Major Crime Unit investigated the case, the file was sent to the Prosecutor's Office for opinion on potential charges.

It was determined that the man forced his way into the woman's suite and "placed her in a position where she was forced to defend herself and her children," a media release from the Saskatoon Police Service said.

The woman and man lived in the same duplex but there was no relationship between the two, according to police.

The Crown found that there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction for any death-related offenses. Police said no charges will be laid in this case.
