Lighthouse may expand stabilization unit thanks to donation

The Lighthouse shelter in Saskatoon could expand the hours for its stabilization unit as soon as next month.

The stabilization unit helps people who are drunk or high and need a place to sleep for that night. The Lighthouse has a briefdetoxunit, but it'stargetedat long-term clients who are trying to get sober.

The Lighthouse cancelled its daytime program earlier this year when it lost its funding. This meant the 20 stabilization beds were only available at night.

But an anonymous donation made just before Christmas is "allowing us to open up hopefully right away. For how long, that will be determined," said Lighthouse executive director DonWindels.

"We're hoping for until at least March 31, so we get the coldest months covered. That's the goal."

The Lighthouse board is meeting this week to discuss expanding the hours.
