Saskatoon commuters will soon have one more bridge at their disposal as the city plans to reopen the University Bridgeafterthe Tuesday morning rush.

In a statement Monday afternoon, the city confirmed its intentionto reopen the bridge, which had off-limits to most vehicles after rehabilitation work on its deck began in early May.

Transit will "continue as scheduled," although routes that normally take the University Bridge may be rerouted over the Broadway Bridge during the morning commute, the city said.

First major work in 40 years

No significant work had been done on the bridge's deck for more than 40 years. Crews were expected tear out rotting pieces of concrete and rebar and pour a new concrete base this summer.

The rehabilitation project becamenecessary after engineers flagged structural issues with the bridge deck in 2014.

Initially, commuters were told the bridge would be closed until the end of August. The dryer-than-normal summer, however, allowed workto progressmore quicklythan expected.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency vehicles were still able to use the bridgewhile it was closed.
