Saskatoon proposes snow removal improvements based on public survey results

On a snowy day in Saskatoon, city hall is talking up its commitment to keep roads and sidewalks safe this winter and says the will of the people will guide their plows.

Almost 2,000 people took part in a workshop or filled out a survey this year to help city hall best understand what the top concerns are, when it comes to snow and ice.

"While we've made many improvements, it was no surprise to hear respondents have ongoing concerns with winter maintenance," said Brandon Harris, Director of Roadways and Operations.

That feedback will make its way into budget deliberations this month as city council how to best spend $1.2 million to keep roads and sidewalks clear.

The big concern for people who responded to the city's survey is uncleared and icy neighbourhood sidewalks.

"We have proposed a pilot study to assemble a rapid response team to undertake targeted snow and ice clearing in residential areas," said Harris.

The city will also work to remind people that it is their responsibility to clearthe sidewalk in front of their homes and it will do that through education and enforcement.

Among other things, the city will also try to do a better job of keeping bike lanes clear, and try to raise public awareness on safe winter driving.
