Tentative agreement doesn't end Saskatoon Transit cancellations

Saskatoon Transit riders will have to continue navigating bus cancellations until the city and transit workers finalize a collective bargaining agreement.

Job action by Saskatoon Transit workers continues after their union and the City of Saskatoon announced the two sides emerged from bargaining with a tentative agreement.

On Friday evening, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 615announced its members will vote on the proposed deal Tuesday. If they accept the agreement, it will go to city council for approval.

According to the city, job action which began on Nov. 12 will continue until the agreement is ratified. Until then, transit users can expect more departure cancellations and crowded buses due to the union's overtime ban.

"It's really affecting me now because it's cold," Alex Bird said of the job action as he waited for his bus on Saturday. "I feel for some people when it's -40."

Bird had been waiting for his bus for 30 minutes when he spoke to CBC News. He said he normally would only have a 15-minute wait.

Kevin Lewis said he's been lucky and hasn't had any delays in the four weeks since job action began.

"I do check the mobile app that they have now. It gives us riders updates on any cancellations."

Tuiara Sivtseva agreed that she has had to plan out her trip a bit more.

"Now I have to check the application all of the time because I don't know [if] the bus will come or not or will it be too full?"
