Indigenous music in the spotlight at new Saskatoon festival

First Nations musicians will get to be in the spotlight as part of the first-ever Saskatchewan World Indigenous Festival for the Arts (SWIFFA) next week.

Held at the Delta Bessborough on Aug. 24 and 25, the festival will feature both local talent and performers from Africa, New Zealand, Australia and the U.S.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Neil Sasakamoose who helped the festival get organized said many First Nations people don't get the chance to showcase their music in a venue. SWIFFAis giving some young, local performers that chance.

"I really want to encourage non-First Nations people to come downtown and really listen to First Nations music, Indigenous music the beat of what they try to produce," Sasakamoose said.

"It's a good time."

Funds will be raised during the festival in support of Women Walking Together, which raises awareness and provides support to families of missing Aboriginal women.
