A 17-year-old boy ran into a moving car and was arrested at gunpoint after fleeing the scene of a Saskatoon armed robbery that police say never happened.

Just after 5:30 p.m. CST on Friday, police received a call from a person reporting an armed robbery at a restaurant in the 2400 block of 22nd Street W.

The caller told police he was in the "back of the store" and there was a man with a shotgun in the kitchen area of the restaurant.

Police said the caller went on to provide a physical description of the suspect but hung up when the police operator asked for his name. The number was blocked so police were unable to call him back.

Numerous police units responded to the scene.

As the first group of officers were arriving, they saw a person that matched the physical description provided by the caller.

When police started chasing the teen,he ran out onto 22nd Street W. and into the side of a moving car, leaving a dent.

He then got up and kept running until he was arrested at gunpoint a short distance away.

Officers spoke to staff at all of the restaurants in the area but could not find anyone who knew about an armed robbery.

Police did not find a weapon in the teen's possession or along the route of the foot chase.

However, police said the teen did have an outstanding warrant for his arrest for breaching a court order.

After being checked by MD Ambulance workers he was transported to the police detention centre and held in custody.

Police said there were no other injuries associated with the incident.

Officers are still investigating who was responsible for making the false report.
