Whether children are riding the school bus, walking or cycling home, drivers in Saskatchewan are being encouraged to be diligent to ensure kids safety during the back-to-school season.

"Watch for the posted speed limit in your local area," said Lyle Karasiuk, the director of public affairs with Parkland Ambulance.

"Watch for the school patrollers that will be out at designated crosswalks in your local area and abide by that."

With the sun beginning to rise later and set earlier, Karasiuk said drivers should be cautious about kids crossing the street in the dark while commuting to school or to the bus stop.

Karasiuk suggests parents teach their children proper safety measures, such as looking both ways before crossing the street and being able to identify the nearest crosswalk to their school.

With the nice weather, many children may choose to cycle to and from school, something Karasiuk said kids need to be careful with.

"It's that time where hand signals are important, bike helmets are important."

Kids in both majorSaskatchewan cities can now ride public transit for free.

Starting September 1, Saskatoon has followed Regina's lead in eliminating bus fares for children in grade eight and below. Regina has provided free public transportation for kids aged 13 and under since 2022.

Saskatoon city council voted to eliminate the charge earlier this summer. An ID is no longer required for kids to ride the bus.

"It will be good," said Mario Masood, a Saskatoon resident."It will be convenient for them to be on time and get to school on time because people are struggling nowadays."

The free bus fares include Saskatoon transit and Access transit services.
