University of Saskatchewan unveils new draft policy on sexual assault

The University of Saskatchewan has a new draft policy that it hopes will help create a campus free of sexual assault and misconduct.

The policy was released today, as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Week at the U of S.

"This policy signals that the safety of our students and staff is paramount," said Vice-provost Patti McDougall.

"Little will have changed for someone who is a target for sexual assault or sexual abuse on campus. It's not that the university is approaching this somehow in a different way. We are trying to take the steps required to build awareness and shift culture"

The draft policy now clearly defines sexual assault, sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, coercion, consent and stalking. It also highlights the importance of prevention, supporting victims, and holding offenders accountable.

Student leader hails draft policy

Bringing in a stronger policy was an important part of USSU President Jack Saddleback's campaign last spring.

"When I ran for president I made it clear that I would do all I could to ensure that the voices of students would be heard," said Saddleback. "Today, I am pleased that the university administration has listened."

The new policy comes a day after a reported sexual assault near the U of S campus.
