Attawapiskat evacuation goes smoothly, says province

The evacuation Attawapiskat First Nation on the shores of James Bay went smoothly on the weekend.

Emergency Management Ontario says about 1,000 residents threatened by flooding have been moved to Val d'or and Rouyn-Noranda in Quebec and Kirkland Lake, Fort Frances and Wawa in Ontario.

Emergency Management Ontario says Val d'or is taking about 340 people, while 335 are being flown to Rouyn-Noranda.
Another 325 residents have been taken to the northern Ontario communities.

Attawapiskat First Nation leaders declared an emergency due to the high risk of flooding.

An evacuation of Kashechewan First Nation, which involved more than 1,500 residents, was completed last week.
