Charges laid in case of dog shot in face

Four charges of animal cruelty have been laid against a 32-year-old man in connection with the shooting of Buddy the dog.

OPP responded to a complaint in St. Charles on March 6 that a German Shepherd dog had been shot.

The dog had serious injuries to his face and was treated at the Walden Animal Hospital but, after two surgeries, he reportedly died of heart failure last week.

Brad Dewar, a spokesperson with the Ontario SPCA, said the law doesn't require that animals be euthanized by a veterinarian.

"However, when a person makes a decision to euthanize animal, it must be done humanely, in such a way that the animal does not suffer," Dewar said.

Meanwhile, Dewar said provincial police are keeping a close eye on threatening comments posted on internet sites related to this case.

He said that is one of the reasons the name of the accused has not been released.
