Chemical spill forces evacuations in North Bay

A tanker driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and people were evacuated after a chemical spill Monday in North Bay.

A tanker driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and people were evacuated after a chemical spill Monday in the municipality of North Bay in northern Ontario.

Provincial police say residents in the area near a single-vehicle collision involving the tanker on Highway 63 near Silver Lady Lane were evacuated. The collision caused a spill of formaldehyde.

The highway could remain closed until Tuesday.

Police say people should stay 800 metres from the spill, but add some fumes may become airborne.

Officials says anyone who feels burning of the eyes, nose or throat are asked to leave the area and seek medical advice or treatment.

North Bay Fire Department, Ministry of the Environment, Ontario Provincial Police and North Bay police were among those on the scene.
