City of Sudbury now in charge of animal control

The City of Greater Sudbury says it's now officially at the helm of enforcing local animal control bylaws, and operating a new shelter.

Dogs and cats held at Rainbow District Animal Shelter will remain there until adopted or fostered

The City of Sudbury takes over animal control on Tuesday, using their facility on Kari Rd. in Wahnapitae for lost animals.

The City of Greater Sudbury says it's now officially at the helm of enforcing local animal control bylaws, and operating a new shelter.

As of Tuesday, city animal control officers will bring roaming or abandoned dogs and cats to the Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter, located at 39 Kari Road in Wahnapitae.

The city's contract with current service provider Rainbow District Animal Shelter expires on October 31st.

Lost or homeless dogs and cats found up until last Monday will remain at the Rainbow District Animal Shelter, where they will stay until they are adopted or fostered.

Caroline Hallsworth, executive director of administrative services with the city, said in a press release that keeping the animals in one place is more efficient, as well as easier on the animals.

"Ultimately, this plan is less stressful for the animal and the well-being of these dogs and cats is the primary concern of both Rainbow District and Greater Sudbury animal shelters," Hallsworth said.
