City of Elliot Lake addressing leaky roof in public building

Mayor says structural integrity of White Mountain Academy is solid

The White Mountain Academy was converted into a community hub in Elliot Lake. Now, the city is working to stop leaks in the roof.

The community of Elliot Lake is dealing with another leaky roof on a public building, but the mayor says the structural integrity of White Mountain Academy is sound.

The building used to be home to an art school, but was converted into a community hub to replace the ill-fated Algo Centre Mall. It was also renovated to hold the Elliot Lake Public inquiry into the mall disaster.

That public inquiry found decades of leaking caused the roof-top parking deck at the mall to collapse in 2012, killing two people.

Elliot Lake mayor Dan Marchisella said the city is aware of the water problems at White Mountain Academy.

"There was some concern brought forward, but the White Mountain facility doesn't have any parking on the roof," he said.

"As it is with most flat roof tops, if the ice and snow is not taken care of through the winter and spring, you do end up with leaking."

He said people are sensitive about seeing buckets catching leaks following the mall tragedy, but said the city is addressing the problems at White Mountain Academy.

"The structural integrity of the building is solid," he said.

"There's been engineer reports done on it."

Marchisella said there's no estimate yet on the cost to fix the White Mountain Academy roof, but city staff are seeking quotes for the repairs.
