One of Sudbury's iconic green water towers has started to come down.

On Friday, Priestly Demolition of Aurorahad begun demolition on the decades-old water tower, which is locatednear the intersection of Elm and Regent Streets.

The city of Greater Sudbury contracted the company to demolish the tower for $191,000. City officials said the contractor will also get to sell the metal for scrap.

The tower was built more than 50 years ago, but has sat empty and rusting for the past decade.

Once the structure is removed, the city plans to turn that spot into a park.
